We took part in Bressingham and Fersfield Open Gardens when visitors from Diss and surrounding villages came and admired the raised beds in our south garden; roses, lavender, petunias and other bedding plants, as well as vegetables and fruit bushes. The vegetables the residents planted have done well despite the heatwave, thanks to good soil and regular watering by our resident gardeners. Courgettes, tasty new potatoes, runner beans and sweetcorn have been harvested, cooked and eaten. There has also been a good crop of tomatoes, blackcurrants, strawberries and tayberries. Stephen is growing tomatoes and fuchsias in his new poly tunnel – a birthday present from his family.

At Friends of Fenners Garden Party last weekend, families and friends enjoyed the usual mix of barbeque, tombola, raffle, cream teas and refreshments, as well as home produce of chutneys and jams, buns and cakes, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Visitors enjoyed the new comfortable garden furniture bought by the residents with sponsored fundraising by one of Friends of Fenners committee. The Garden Party fundraising topped the £300 mark with last minute contributions still coming in. Many thanks to everyone; residents, staff, friends and families who helped with their contributions of prizes, organisation and generosity in the day. As you can see from the photos, we all had an enjoyable get together.

Achievements and activities

As well as onsite day care including gardening, cooking, singing and drumming, and exercise classes, offsite daycare continues at Onward Enterprise workshop for 2 residents, Beyond the Wall (Thornham Walled Garden) for 2 and Street Forge Workshop (woodworking) for 1 resident. Horse riding with RDA continues over the summer and the gym and swimming remain options, along with occasional 10 pin bowling and Polly Munro’s Extend classes twice a month. Barry Jones continues to visit for weekly ‘Singalong’ and drumming sessions. On the last Tuesday evening of every month, Fenners residents can choose to attend LEAF (Leisure, Entertainment, Activity and Friendship) Club at Shelfanger Village Hall, run by organisers of the former Gateway Club, Janette and John.

A BIG thank you to Jean and Walter Stone for contributing toward tickets for the Norfolk Show, residents who attended had a great day. See photos to above.

We recently celebrated Stephen’s 60th Birthday, with a party held in the garden, with lots of guests, lovely food and cake, and thanks to Stephen’s family for music by the Dixieland Jazz Trio.

Musical entertainment was also enjoyed recently with an evening of singing and acoustic guitar playing by Simon’s nephews Rory and Jonny – Thank you very much!

Alison’s popular Quiz Nights have raised £89 for Friends of Fenners and the next one is planned for Saturday 20th October – a Pie and Mash evening

Many thanks to our friends from Beyond the Wall who, with other residents, visitors and helpers supported our Alzheimer’s Society coffee and cupcake morning by eating what residents and staff had baked, and joining in the guessing games. Together we raised £130
